Openness

Palm adopted a far more user friendly and less industry-imposed approach than Apple:

• USB mass storage (disk mode) support
• Bluetooth with A2DP stereo standard support
• Modem use
• Removable battery
• MicroUSB connector

Palm seem to have listened, because these features are among the most longed-for by iPhone users.

The keyboard

The physical keyboard of the Prē could be a selling point for people who are used to their Treo or Blackberry keyboards but in my opinion it can’t keep up with the virtual keyboard of the iPhone in terms of universal applicability and, of course, sexiness. Seeing the whole screen and having physical feedback while typing may be advantages of the hardware keyboard, but I don’t miss that on the iPhone.

I guess it is simply a matter of taste and I think it won’t be long until we see a successor of the Prē with a touch screen keyboard, utilising the promising Swype technology, which will hopefully also be available system-wide on the iPhone soon.

The camera

Its digital camera is a real weak point of the iPhone. It’s slow and far too sensitive to motion, most photos are blurry. The Prē features a 3 megapixel camera with a built-in LED flash which will hopefully provide for better photos. Unfortunately, I haven’t found any information indicating whether you can record films with the Prē or not.

Mac OS X vs. webOS

On the iPhone you can only run one application at a time for whatever reason, despite the multitasking-capable operating system. According to Palm, the Prē has been built with multitasking in mind. You can leave applications open, switch between them and even receive notifications from them when they are in the background, without distracting you too much from your current task.

Furthermore, the Prē promises to integrate the web wherever possible. For instance: The contact list not only shows you your locally stored contacts, but also the ones from Facebook, GMail and the like and combines the duplicates. Nice!

Above all, the Prē supports copy & paste. Yay!

iPhone SDK vs. Palm Mojo SDK

Only a few details have been released on the Palm Developer Network about their new software development kid named ”Mojo”:

Palm webOS applications are easy to write using Mojo, a new application framework based on the HTML 5, CSS and JavaScript standards that web developers already know and love. WebOS applications are installed and run directly on the device at native speed and have access to a wide range of device services.

Being able to develop applications for the Pre with my everyday means sounds exciting and has the potential of attracting hundreds of thousands other web developers. But Palm has yet to sell a decent number of their device to really be interesting to them, which will not be an easy task.

Conclusion

The Prē promises to be an exciting device and has the potential of being a serious competitor to the iPhone. If it proves to be as good as Palm advertise, I definitely will consider trading my iPhone for it. But it also remains to be seen, how Apple react to the Prē. At best, they will finally remove those silly restrictions from the iPhone and add features like the USB mass storage support.

So why have I switched after all?

Social networks. It has never been this easy to stay in touch with your friends/family/followers/colleagues while on the go. While the E90 is a phone with additional features, the iPhone is more of a rich internet client with an additional phone (and iPod).

Ease of use. For instance, to connect to a VPN with the E90 you need a Windows PC to install the VPN client and you have to be an expert to set it up. With the iPhone, you just enter the account information – done.

Fun. Of course, the iPhone is much more fun to use. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

So here are my favourite apps for the iPhone 3G:

Social Networks

• Facebook
  This is a perfect example of how to transform a web service to a mobile device.
• Fring
  Great instance messaging and voice chat application. Supports Skype, MSN Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ, SIP(!), Twitter, Yahoo! and AIM.
• NatsuLion
  My favourite Twitter client for the iPhone.
• Newsstand
  After playing with a few newsreaders, I stuck to Newsstand, although the user interface in landscape mode gets extremely slow if you have subscribed to a lot of feeds.
• WordPress
  Write posts and manage your WordPress blogs (hosted and self-installed) with this app. It’s still missing crucial features but it looks very promising.
• XING
  Another social network, another app.

Productivity

• Things
  The iPhone version of the great task manager for Mac. Sync your to-do items with your desktop application via Wi-Fi.

Utilities

• AirSharing
  Share your files between your iPhone and any computer over Wi-Fi. The best alternative to a real disk mode so far.
• MobileFiles
  Easily access the files on your iDisk with this handy tool (MobileMe membership required).
• Network Utility
  The usual suspects: Ping, port scan, WhoIs, GeoIP.
• TouchTerm
  Nice terminal app. Great to administer your servers. SSL/SSH support included.

Games

• Asphalt 4
  Great racing game!
• DigiDrummer
  Since I was the drummer in our school band ages ago, this is the right app to reminisce about past glory.
• FourFree
  Classic Connect Four game.
• Frenzic
  Highly addictive, fast-paced game.
• Galcon Lite
  Also a highly addictive, fast-paced game. I’m thinking about buying the full version.
• Lightsaber
  Finally, you don’t have to make the sounds of your lightsaber by yourself anymore when fighting a duel with your co-workers!

Die Kernkompetenz von OmniGraffle ist eigentlich Diagramme aller Art herzustellen. Durch den hohen Grad an Flexibilität lässt es sich aber auch ideal für die Interface-Planung einsetzen. Sind einem die Standard-Formen zu abstrakt, kann man sich unter Graffletopia.com jede Menge wunderbare Schablonen herunterladen.

Die Web Page Elements sind nur ein Beispiel für Schablonen zur Planung von Front-Ends für das Web.

Die iPhone Wire Frames machen die Entwicklung von Screens für das iPhone zum Kinderspiel.

Photoshop

Auch für Photoshop gibt es Vorlagen, die sich für die Planung und Erstellung von Benutzeroberfläche einsetzen lassen.

Die Designers Toolbox bietet unter anderem freigestellte Formular-Elemente im Design verschiedener Browser und Betriebssysteme.

Der Webdesigners Toolkit stellt ebenfalls Formular-Elemente zum Download zur Verfügung, allerdings nur nach Betriebssystem unterteilt. Dafür gibt er dort auch leere Browserfenster von allen gängigen Browsern in verschiedenen Größen im Photoshop-Format, die man für die Planung und Präsentation von Benutzeroberflächen verwenden kann.

Für mich ist derzeit das Sony Ericsson P1 am interessantesten, da es meiner Meinung nach ein sehr gutes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis bietet. Offenbar gibt es laut einigen Forumsbeiträgen noch Probleme mit der Synchronisation zwischen P1 und Mac, aber spätestens mit dem Release von Missing Sync for Symbian ist das vorbei. Die Palm-Version dieser Software verwende ich schon länger um die Daten mit meinem LifeDrive zu syncen.

Update 1: Hat man eine Speicherkarte im Nokia E90, kann man es sehr wohl als USB-Massenspeicher verwenden.

Bildschirm

Die Brillianz des Bildschirms ist nach wie vor faszinierend, auch bei direkter Sonneneinstrahlung konnte man die Icons noch halbwegs erkennen. Die Bedienung via Touchscreen ist (meistens) intuitiv und macht Spaß.

Kamera

Die eingebaute Kamera reicht für nette Schnappschüsse von gierigen Eichkätzchen, allerdings ist sie schon ziemlich empfindlich. Die Bewegung des Fingers zum Auslöser hat oft schon genügt um das Bild zu verwackeln.

Kein Disk-Modus

Nachdem es nicht mein iPhone war, konnte ich keine Synchronisation mit iTunes durchführen. Eines der größten Mankos ist für mich der fehlende Disk-Modus, mit dem man das iPhone einfach als USB-Datenträger verwenden könnte.

Wie bekam ich also die Fotos vom iPhone runter? Letztendlich blieb mir nichts anderes übrig, als ein E-Mail Konto einzurichten und mir die Fotos -eines nach dem anderen- zu schicken. Dass jeder einzelne Anhang “photo.jpg” hieß, hat auch nicht unbedingt zur einfachen Weiterverarbeitung beigetragen…

Klingeltöne

Die vorhandenen Klingeltöne sind nicht wirklich das Gelbe vom Ei und sehen zu sehr nach “Komm in den iTunes Music Store und kauf’ Dir bessere” aus. Und im US-Store kostet ein Ringtone zusätzlich zum Musikstück nochmals 99 US-Cent. Also nur weil ich einen Musiktitel als Klingelton verwenden möchte, zahle ich gleich das doppelte?!

Zusätzliche Software

Ein Smartphone, auf dem Mac OS X läuft? Genial! Ein Mac OS X ohne SDK? Weniger genial! Apple stellt zur Entwicklung von Applikationen lediglich die Widget-API zur Verfügung und das ist meiner Meinung nach etwas wenig.

Sogar die Installation von Fremdsoftware auf dem iPhone ist nicht ohne weiteres möglich. Glücklicherweise gibt es Tools, wie zum Beispiel den Installer, mit deren Hilfe man weitere Software recht schnell draufspielen kann. Wann es diesbezüglich die ersten Klagen von Apple geben wird, sei abzuwarten…

Fazit

Näher betrachtet ist das iPhone voller Restriktionen. Von der verpflichtenden Freischaltung mittels iTunes angefangen, über das Vorschreiben, welche Dateien man als Klingelton verwenden darf und welche nicht, bis hin zum Aussperren von Fremdsoftware. Irgendwie ist das ärger, als jeder SIM-Lock und jedes Betreiberbranding, das ich bis jetzt gesehen habe.

Es ist legitim als Unternehmen Gewinn machen zu wollen, aber irgendwie hinterlässt die jetzige Version des iPhones bei mir den Eindruck als wolle man aus den Käufern noch den allerletzten Cent herausquetschen.

Da waren sogar die Eichkätzchen von Schönbrunn weniger gierig…

Und ich muss sagen: der Hype kommt nicht von ungefähr. Alleine das iPhone zu bedienen macht so viel Spaß, dass die eigentlichen Funktionen wie zum Beispiel telefonieren, der iPod Modus oder surfen wie Nebenfeatures wirken. Das Zoomen von Websites oder Fotos oder das Blättern im iPod Album ist tatsächlich so lässig, wie es bei der Keynote von Steve Jobs ausgesehen hat.

Besonders beeindruckt hat mich die Qualität des Bildschirms. Irgendwie hatte ich nicht das Gefühl auf einen zu schauen. Alles gestochen scharf – 160 dpi (!) machen’s möglich.

Für einen ausführlichen Test war leider keine Zeit, ich war ja schließlich auch nicht alleine im Laden… Der folgt dann, sobald das iPhone offiziell in Österreich – und damit sicherlich auch in meinen Händen – landet.

Dieses grandiose Ereignis wurde natürlich gleich mit einem herkömmlichen Handy festgehalten:
